RusellVanderbroucke“At 10 a.m. on Friday, July 10, Steve Beshear, Democratic governor of Kentucky, officially opened a traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall in Lexington. At precisely the same time, Nikki Barber, Republican governor of South Carolina, presided at the lowering of the Confederate flag. The juxtaposition is coincidental, but the intense emotions enveloping the aftermath of two lost causes are not, despite the 150 years and 8,000 miles separating them.”

“Last weekend, about 100 U.S. Veterans for Peace gathered in Red Wing, Minnesota, for a statewide annual meeting. In my experience, Veterans for Peace chapters hold “no-nonsense” events. Whether coming together for local, statewide, regional or national work, the Veterans project a strong sense of purpose. They want to dismantle war economies and work to end all wars. The Minnesotans, many of them old friends, convened in the spacious loft of a rural barn. After organizers extended friendly welcomes, participants settled in to tackle this year’s theme: “The War on Our Climate.””

“We are today 70 years out from the fateful interregnum period between the world’s first atomic bomb explosion—the test fire Trinity at Alamogordo, New Mexico on 16 July 1945—and the world’s first atomic bomb attack—on a bright sunny morning of 6 August 1945 when one bomb incinerated tens of thousands of civilians in Hiroshima.”

The Iran Deal is a Good Starting Point

“President Obama said: “If 99 percent of the world community and the majority of nuclear experts look at this thing and they say this will prevent Iran from getting a nuclear bomb, and you are arguing either that it does not or that even if it does, it’s temporary, then you should have some alternative.”

He is right, there are ultimately two approaches to resolving problems, as Obama said, “… diplomatically, through a negotiation, or it’s resolved through force. Through war[!] Those are the options.” This reality is worthy of further exploration.”

The engagement critics

MelGurtov
“One of the predictable outcomes of any US effort to reset relations with an adversary is that allies start whining about their vulnerability and demanding some sort of compensation for it. Thus, no sooner was the nuclear deal with Iran concluded than the Israelis, Saudis, and other Middle East partners criticize it as representing abandonment and emboldening Iran to become a stronger meddler in neighbors’ affairs. All sorts of dire predictions about horrendous consequences are already on record, clearly intended to influence the Obama administration to give these folks something for their pain—like money, arms (both of which they get in abundance), and especially new commitments.”

Missile Fields Scandalized from Top to Bottom

JohnLaForge
“Over the last several years, a surprising number of high-ranking military officers have been investigated, punished or fired over conduct unbecoming, sexual harassment, sexual violence, retaliation against subordinates, recruiting fraud and financial improprieties. In 2014, a Pentagon study found that reports of rapes and sexual assaults in the military increased eight percent, and this came on the heels of a 50 percent increase in reported rapes and sexual assaults in 2013.”
