The War on Marriage on Christmas

“Very rarely does our government ask us what to have a war on. The proposal for missile strikes into Syria was a rare occasion when public pressure and other factors compelled Congress to demand a say. Public pressure then compelled Congress to say No.”

No peace through military strength. A response to Catherine Ashton’s “To Secure Peace, Be Ready for Battle”

AVAILABLE FOR REPRINT. Copy and use freely. Please help PeaceVoice by notifying us when you use this piece: PeaceVoiceDirector@gmail.com

““The War to End all Wars” never achieved what H.G. Wells implied with this term. On the contrary, World War I not only resulted in the death of more than 16 million humans, it also resulted in a victor’s peace directly setting the stage for World War 2 where an estimated 60 to 100 million people died. I like to believe that no World War is on the horizon, but I was quite surprised to read the headline of a Wall Street Journal opinion piece “To Secure Peace, Be Ready for Battle. The surprise not so much was the title itself. This language—promoting ‘peace’ by amassing more military—has been all-too-familiar and all-too-common in the twenty-first century perpetual ineffective and counterproductive war on terror and other misguided relics like humanly insane nuclear deterrence or the offensive, war-waging North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).”

“Four more innocents were released from America’s Robben Island this month. Our offshore penal colony at Guantanamo Bay still holds 158 prisoners, 84 of whom have been cleared for release. The men sent home were never charged with a crime and were cleared four years ago.”

Jesus and the G.I.

“Recently a set of very powerful images came across the web in one of those emails that circulate around the country. The opening line said, “If this doesn’t get to you, nothing will.” I thought I could just ignore it, but I couldn’t. It got to me. I found myself waking up at night seeing these tragic images that showed a young woman, sleeping beside a coffin that held the remains of her soldier-husband. I wanted to put my arms around her, to comfort her, to hold her and say, “It will be alright.” But it won’t. Her loss is irreplaceable, her grief inconsolable. And at the end of the string of images was a tag line—the lesson we were supposed to learn from this. “The only two people who ever laid down their lives for you are Jesus Christ and the American G.I.””

Archeology and the Atom

“We have all heard of the city of Idu. Right? Thousands of families living there, carrying out their normal lives, government housed in lavish buildings, written documents, trade, religion, etc. Well, it was lost. A whole city lost. Idu flourished in the 13th century B.C. We knew it had existed from some ancient Assyrian records, but had no idea where it was. Archeologists finally found it last year, buried in northern Iraq. And then there is the case of Richard the Third, one of the most famous kings of England who died in one of the most famous battles in the year1485, just 528 years ago. You would think his tomb would have been a carefully preserved site viewed by thousands of tourists today. But in fact no one knew where he was buried until last year when archeologists found him under a parking lot! Let’s consider nuclear power plants and weapons manufacturing in the light of Idu and Richard.”

Masculinity Question Still Missing Post Newtown

“As we prepare for the gut-wrenching first anniversary of Newtown on Saturday, I teeter back and forth between sadness and anger. Sadness that 20 six and seven year-olds were murdered—along with a half-dozen Sandy Hook Elementary School educators—and anger that public officials and most of the media still largely ignore the missing component in the Connecticut tragedy—the gender of the shooter.”
