“Honduras has been experiencing vicious drug wars that have made it among the most violent places on earth, deadlier even than most conventional war zones. As Mexico has cracked down on drug trafficking, the Mafia and other elements of organized crime have moved into the Northern triangle of Central America (Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador.) These poverty stricken countries do not have the resources to deal with the narco-trafficking taking place within their border. Honduras has one of the highest murder rates in the Western Hemisphere. In 2010 Honduras was the most dangerous country in the world for a journalist. Thirteen journalists have been killed in the past 18 months and only two of these murders have been solved….”

“Israel Defense Forces are reportedly training for a fierce assault intended to “secure†each boat in the flotilla, the “Freedom Flotilla 2″. As passengers specifically on the U.S. boat, we may be spared the most violent responses, although Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has not ruled out such violent responses and has preemptively certified that any response we may “provoke” (in sailing from international waters to a coastline that is not part of Israel) is an expression of Israel’s “right to defend themselves.” Israel says it is prepared for a number of scenarios, ranging from “no violence” (which it knows full well to expect) to “extreme violence” (click here). We are preparing ourselves not to panic, and to practice disciplined nonviolence whatever scenario Israel decides to enact….”

Climate Change Chronicles

“Anthropogenic climate change did not begin with the industrial revolution. It began with our first use of fire. It is only that atmospheric and climate system limits hadn’t yet been reached earlier in the story. We have reached those limits, unforeseen and unexpected, only so very recently. The behavioral patterns that have led us to those limits have existed from our beginnings.
“Our behavior over the past 200 years hasn’t been an aberration but has been consistent with our survival strategies from the beginning. There is a notable connection between anthropogenic climate change and our inventiveness and our creativity. Though it is certainly time to recognize our impact on the planet and change our ways, and quickly, our intent has not been malicious; there has been some innocence in our activities.
“Recognizing this might prompt the addition of some compassion to our self-analysis….”

War? Bloodlust? What’s A Scholar To Do?

“The New York Sunday Times on November 28, 2010 published noted historian Geoffrey C. Ward’s review of a biography of President Theodore Roosevelt [TR]. His review reveals something distressing about the way some of our scholars gloss over our iconic figures and write history as the U.S. fights multiple wars.
“A popular war hero, President for seven years, a prominent international figure [awarded the Nobel Peace Prize], arguably the man who built the U.S. overseas empire, TR’s brash aggressiveness has long made him Mount Rushmore in size and a favorite of school texts. He is always listed among our best and most important leaders….”

“In 2011, the number of nuclear weapons countries has risen to nine. Pakistan and India repeat the folly of the U.S.-Soviet rivalry. Will Pakistan remain stable enough to keep its warheads from falling into the wrong hands? Will the generals in charge of them now, both in Pakistan and in India, act with restraint? Jonathan Schell asserts that the potential of a nuclear weapon being used against people is greater than it has been at any time since 1945. The thread holding up Kennedy’s Sword of Damocles has further attenuated….”
